Step Into Roshar: My Custom Vorin Havah
This project was such a labor of love for me: a custom Vorin havah inspired by Brandon Sanderson’s Stormlight Archive. As my favorite author, Sanderson’s worlds have always sparked my imagination, and creating this piece felt like stepping right into Roshar. It’s one of my proudest entries in Katie’s Korner, where I share the designs that bring these incredible stories to life.
Crafting the Havah
I didn’t have to look far for inspiration on this one! Having read The Stormlight Archive more times than I can count, the descriptions of Vorin attire are practically burned into my brain. Designing this havah was like revisiting an old friend. I wanted it to capture the authenticity of Roshar while adding my own touch of artistry.
The dress features a high neckline, a graceful safehand sleeve, and flowing layers of blue fabric—all meant to reflect the serene yet commanding presence of Rosharan nobility. I included subtle floral embellishments and tailored every detail with care, staying true to Sanderson’s vision while ensuring the piece would be comfortable and wearable. I’ll admit, though, my cat decided that the flowing fabric made an excellent napping spot more than once, so there were a few funny interruptions along the way!
Why the Havah Matters
The havah isn’t just clothing; it’s a representation of Vorin culture—their traditions, modesty, and identity. The safehand sleeve is such a unique hallmark of the design, symbolizing the cultural emphasis on decorum, and the flowing silhouette adds a sense of elegance. I loved the challenge of translating these fictional cultural elements into something tangible for fans to enjoy.
As I worked on this piece, I couldn’t help but reflect on how much joy I find in bringing these worlds to life. Whether it’s this havah, my Baldur’s Gate costumes, or Han Solo from Solo: A Star Wars Story, I feel so connected to the stories I recreate. Each project teaches me something new, and this one was no exception.
My Creative Vision
This project reminded me why I love what I do. I don’t just make costumes; I build connections to the worlds and characters I adore. Every detail of this havah—from the fabric choices to the final fitting—was a celebration of Roshar. I hope fans see not just a costume but a piece of Sanderson’s storytelling brought to life.
This havah joins some of my favorite creations, like the Bo-Katan commission and other memorable projects featured in Katie’s Korner. Each design reflects the love and care I put into making something truly unique and meaningful for fans.
