Katie's Korner: Super Floss to the Rescue!
Hey friends! Buckle up—because this edition of Katie's Korner features capes, floss, a heroic nonprofit, and some extremely intense debates about... glue.
So, let me set the scene: The amazing team over at the AAPD Foundation (that’s the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry Foundation, try saying it five times fast) came to us with a vision—a superhero mascot to embody their mission of promoting healthy smiles and fighting the villainy of tooth decay. Naturally, I screamed internally (and externally) with joy. Because superheroes? YES. Custom costumes with heart? DOUBLE YES.
This project was a collaborative labor of love from the very start. We went back and forth with Kyle, Celeste, and the team at AAPD, dialing in every detail from skirt fit to floss box engineering. Yep, you read that right—our hero’s utility belt includes a floss container. And because I like to keep it spicy, we even debated whether to drill the lid shut or leave it slightly open for authenticity. (Spoiler: we went with the open option. Real floss boxes have feelings too.)
The suit itself was designed to fit an average-sized body, not my petite 115-pound frame—so if you noticed the pics and thought, "Wow, the model looks like she might be blown away by a gentle breeze," you’re not wrong. But the proportions of the final costume? Chef’s kiss.
And this wasn’t a solo mission! The incredible Todd (a.k.a. Mr. OuterRim himself) hand-painted the custom artwork on the chest. The man has the steadiest hands west of the Mississippi and also insisted I not hot-glue my own fingers together. It was a team effort in the truest sense.
This build included two-piece construction for easy wear, a detachable skirt, and our signature blend of comic-book flair and performance-ready comfort. I mean, if you're going to save the day, you should at least be able to move in your pants, right?
From the first sketch to final shipment, the AAPD Foundation was a dream to work with. Their mission is powerful, their people are passionate, and now—they have a floss-slinging superhero to prove it.
