The Making of the Heartbreak Kid

Hey friends! Katie here, back with another behind-the-scenes look at one of our latest creations here at OuterRim Creatives! This time, we took on a super fun and challenging project: a Heartbreak Kid inspired jacket and pants set!

When we were first approached to create this costume, we knew we had to stay true to the iconic style of Shawn Michaels, The Heartbreak Kid—the flashy attitude, the bold patterns, and, of course, the hearts! 💔 This commission became an exciting blend of creativity and craftsmanship, and today I want to share a bit more about how we brought this legendary look to life.

The Design Process

The first step in designing any custom costume is, of course, the research. We spent hours poring over images of Shawn Michaels’ classic looks from his prime wrestling days, studying every detail to ensure that our jacket and pants set would embody the same charisma and style he brought to the ring.

The jacket features a striking red-and-black striped lining that pops when you flip the collar, reminiscent of HBK’s signature color scheme. We added heart details on the jacket's chest and zipper pocket, cascading down to give a dynamic, movement-inspired feel. The pants are equally bold, with zebra-print hearts placed in key locations to add texture and visual interest.

Materials and Construction

This jacket is all about the details, and we were intentional with every material and embellishment. For the body of the jacket, we used a sturdy white fabric that would hold its structure while still being comfortable to wear. The contrast between the white base and the striking red, black, and heart elements made the entire piece pop.

The real fun came when we added the chains to the sides, draping from shoulder to hem to give it that rockstar feel—perfect for anyone who wants to turn heads. The chains are a nod to HBK’s rebellious side, adding an edgy flair to the costume.

For the pants, we opted for a softer, more flexible material to allow for movement—whether you're hitting the wrestling ring or the dance floor! We applied zebra-patterned fabric hearts, stitching them carefully onto the pants to ensure durability while keeping the look fun and playful.

The Final Touches

No Heartbreak Kid outfit would be complete without a bold graphic on the back, and this one doesn’t disappoint. We designed a custom logo for the back of the jacket—a large red heart with a golden crown and a banner that reads “Da Turn Up King.” This specific graphic was created for our customer, giving them a personalized touch and fresh spin on the iconic look. Though inspired by Shawn Michaels, this jacket has a unique twist tailored just for the client. It’s bold, it’s flashy, and it’s everything we love about custom costume work!

It was a blast to see this project come to life from start to finish. As with all of our designs, our goal was to stay true to the spirit of the inspiration while adding a touch of OuterRim Creatives’ own magic.

Thanks for coming along on this creative journey with me! Stay tuned for more updates, and as always, if you have a dream costume in mind, don’t hesitate to reach out. We love bringing your visions to life!

Until next time, stay creative and keep turning heads! 💖
